ADVANTAGES OF PHOSPHATE BONDED REFRACTORY PRODUCTS

Following are some of the advantages of phosphate-bonded refractory products.

  • They have, in general, a setting time
  • Shorter drying and start-up times compared to hydraulically bound concrete.- No wetting by liquid aluminium
  • In the case of plastic masses they are ready to be used; they do not need to be mixed. Prepared to be used directly either by hand or with the help of pneumatic hammers.

Heating and drying time
Removing water from a hydraulic concrete is a time-consuming action as the water has to be evacuated through the small porosity of a concrete. Remember that 1cm3 in liquid state is equivalent to approximately 1600cm3 in vapor state. If a large amount of heat arrives, it will generate a high internal vapour pressure that will break and burst the refractory.
Phosphate-bonded refractories contain less water and therefore take less time to dry. It is often said that drying is not necessary. This idea is false.

Non-wettable properties
One of the biggest wear problems in aluminium smelting and maintenance furnaces is the interaction between the refractory lining and the molten metal. Traditional solutions based on hydraulic concretes offer resistance based on the formation of compounds that cannot be wetted by the aluminium, whose correct behaviour is limited by a maximum temperature from which wettability begins and, consequently, the deterioration of the lining.
Phosphate-bonded solutions have proven to have non-wettable properties against liquid aluminium, withstanding higher temperatures than those seen in hydraulically-bonded concretes.

Installation directly or on existing liner
One of the great advantages of phosphate-bonded concrete is that the bond between layers is a chemical bond. This bond is very strong, even when making repairs to the clean substrate of an already used coating.
